The FAQ of Artificial Intelligence

What is artificial intelligence, or AI?

Artificial intelligence is a type of computer program that simulates some aspects of actual intelligence. It consists of neural nets, machine learning, and other similar types of programs. Artificial intelligence may range from a simple learning model that is simply equivalent to a linear model, or something as advanced as ChatGPT. Therefore, it is useful to think about AI in three levels:

  1. Level 1: Basic and simplistic algorithms that don't have many surprising features such as machine-learning models that are equivalent to linear regression models.
  2. Level 2: Generative programs such as ChatGPT and Midjourney that can do surprising things and simulate some aspects of creativity.
  3. Level 3: Programs that are as powerful as Level 2 programs but are even more advanced to the point that they are difficult to distinguish from human intelligence, and they may even surpass human intelligence.

Even Level 1 programs are dangerous because they lead easily to Level 2 programs and hence all three forms should be eliminated.

Is AI just another automation?

No. Artificial intelligence differs from other automations in one crucial way: it is meant to replace human beings at doing creative tasks. While AI may not be creative itself, it can simulate creativity to a sufficient degree so that the creativity of human beings will no longer be required in the broken system of capitalism, which makes it even more broken than before.

Why is artificial intelligence harmful to humanity?
  1. AI takes away jobs from people. It doesn't do this on a small scale like other automations, but targets hundreds of jobs at once, which is what makes AI different than other technologies.
  2. It is an addictive thing that makes people rely less on each other. Instead of seeking normal interactions, AI will be the path of least resistance leading to many people becoming overly reliant on AI. In fact, this is already happening with technology.
  3. AI removes the sense of purpose that people have. Instead of having a real purpose, most people are becoming drones that merely exist to maintain AI and advanced technology.

Many of these things can be said of other technologies. However, it's important to note that this only shows that other technologies aren't exactly healthy either, and should be treated with caution.

Moreover, AI does things things at a speed an order of magnitude above other technologies, which is what makes it so dangerous. Both salt and cyanide are poisons, but certainly cyanide is far more dangerous due to its efficacy.

What can you do about AI?

Join the coalition against AI. This involves making the following vows:

  1. I will not use generative AI for writing, image generation, music, or any other purpose.
  2. I will do my best to support others with this vow, including preferentially choosing businesses and supporting others who vow not to use AI.
  3. I will do my best to avoid supporting AI, including buying things from businesses that use AI and consuming AI-generated content.
What should human society do about AI?

Human society should destroy AI. This would start by forcing all AI companies into bankruptcy. We should also prevent all AI researchers from conducting further research. You can participate by writing letters of protest to AI companies and AI researchers, as well as doing anything else you can think of to stifle the development of AI.
